New Grad

This guest post from Werner Rogers

When I graduated from college in May, I thought everything would be really easy. I thought I would find a job immediately and get paid in time to make my first mortgage payment on a house. I was able to find a job, but it took me four months. Then after I had saved up a few months for a down payment on a house I found one I really liked and was able to buy it. I set up all the utilities and searched online for “Shop electricity rates TEXAS” and found out that I could save money on electricity by having fixed-rate energy. It was a pretty long and frustrating process to get moved in to my new place. I figured out that things do not always go the way you plan for them to go. I guess it is just part of growing up. Now that I have settled into my new home and new job, my next step is to find a husband. I guess I will probably have to find a boyfriend first, but like I said, things do not go the way you plan for them to go.

Custom Winch

Simple project for today.  Had to make a lift over top of work bench that could lift up to 1500 lbs.  I bolted two pocket plates (12 " square plate with 6 x 6 x6 pocket welded on top) to the floor. Then I made a couple of metal brackets to bolt two 6" x 6" x 16' posts to the roof cross beams.  I set the posts into the square pocket plates mounted on the floor then bolted the top into place. I then cut a rectangular hole 2" x 2" and fit a round bar into the holes. I then cross drilled holes through the bar to hold it into place. I used 3/8 bolts. I mounted a roller assembly around the bar with a hook on it.  I then attached my electric winch to the hook and run my cord. I extended the control cord so I could stand on the floor and operate my winch while I guide whatever I have to lift onto the work bench. Now I can work on medium sized Auto-Scrubbers ( up to 800 lbs) and floor buffers without having to lift them or run them up a ramp.

It's all about making my job a little easier.  (Working smarter not harder.)

Until next time....

Oil Seal

Problem:  Buffer comes in with oil leak underneath and a loud engine.

Solution:   Cleaned underside of machine so I could check where oil was leaking from.  Found three oil pan bolts had come loose allowing the pan to separate form the engine block.  This in turn allowed the oil to blow out of the pan giving the engine its loud grinding sound. Lack of oil.  Removed the engine from the machine, then removed the oil pan from the engine.  Replace the leaky gasket and pan oil seal. I used a large flat washer and deep socket to install the oil pan seal. If you don't have a seal installer this method works well to achieve an even installation. Installed the new gasket and pan, filled with oil. Note: Whenever I install an oil, transmission cover, head or intake manifold i always use a specific even alternating or star tightening pattern so as not to warp parts.  Machine was quickly put back online later the same day.

Water Valve

Floor Auto Scrubbing Machine came in with the complaint.. no water getting to floor. I cleaned out all the fresh water lines with an air hose then tried it again. Finally got the water running through to the floor but it would not stop running.  I checked further into the machine and found a large June Bug wedged in the tank filter. The control valve lever working properly but, not stopping the solution flow. The inside of the valve was broken so I removed it and installed a used one I had on hand. Fresh water valves for this machine are very expensive. They often need replacing because they have a plastic flow control that freezes then breaks if not properly drained. Once the valve was replaced the machine was ready to go back to work.

Until next time... keep your floors clean

Shows we like

Thanks for the post, Kathy Shelton

We have had direct tv minnesota for a while now and we all really like it. My dad likes to watch the tennis channel. My mom likes to watch Food Network and now Oprah’s network. I really can’t believe Oprah has her own network. I really am not sure why that was necessary. Whenever I see my mom watching it, it seems like it is just her old talk shows replaying over and over again. I have seen my mom watching Dr. Phil on the channel a few times too. It seems redundant since you can watch those things on normal TV already. I just am not sure what the purpose of her network is other than for people like my mom to relive sad episodes. My sisters all like different channels and shows. Some of them prefer shows like Jersey Shore and then some of them, like the younger two, still like little kid channels. I really am not a fanatic of any channel, but I really enjoy watching AMC. That is the channel that plays all of the really older movies. I do not know why I like it so much, but I always have enjoyed watching black and white film.

Prevent Downtime

Those in depth problems I was talking about earlier, well one came in just as I was leaving work a few days ago.  One of the Service Techs brought his scrubber in with one wheel nearly off.  Upon further inspection I found that the bearings were shot and the wheels needed to be replaced. The next morning I came in pulled the wheels off and started looking around for new ones.  The Auto-Scrubber Company gave me a price that I was not very happy with.  The more I looked around the better the news got. After a couple hours searching by phone and internet I came upon a set that was the right price.  We ordered them from Grainger.com who quickly shipped them to us.  I put an out of order sign on the machine for several days until the new wheels arrived.  While I was waiting I took the time to clean the machine completely and check all the systems. The electrical, ie. battery, cables, wires and connections making sure they all worked properly, also check the vacuum system and motor, greased all fittings and prepped the machine for the new wheels.  When they arrived  it only took a half hour to grease and install the new wheels. The machine was back on line and ready to go to work. I put the battery on the charger overnight and sent it out to work the next afternoon.  By going over the machines that come in for major repair completely it helps prevents further downtime with that machine. Downtime costs the company money.
